ROAD SAFETY

What does it mean?

Personally, when I look or hear the word ‘road safety’, the first few things that pops out of my mind are: ‘do not drive fast’ and ‘wear your seatbelt’.

Why is it a priority?
These are Brunei’s road statistics:
1. On average, there are more than 2,500 road accidents per year
2. More than 30 people per year were killed in road accidents.
3. The estimate for road deaths is about 12.5 for every 100,000 residents.

Do you want to be one of the 12.5 residents that is involved in road deaths or do you want to be one of the 30 people killed in road accidents or do you want to be involved one of the 2,500 accidents. I don't think so. Let’s not be one of the statistics. Let’s not contribute to the figures.

You can’t predict these things, you will wake up feeling great everyday about yourself and the next thing you know, you could be lying on the side of the road, can’t move, paralyzed and at that moment, you would be thinking, ‘I should have not gone out’ or ‘I should have worn my seat belt’ or ‘I should have avoided that wood lying on the road’. You should have but you couldn’t. You can’t avoid these things, especially when the fault is not yours. You can say “I don’t drive fast but what about other people, they drive fast too!” Yes, I agree. It’s a matter of individual attitude BUT there are things that you can do to minimize the impact on you.

BSP “Tell-a-friend” was launched early this year but I have to admit, I have not been telling a friend in regards to Road Safety. However, this shall be my contribution to 'Tell-a-friend'.

Always wear your seatbelt

Follow the speed limit

Do not use your handphone while driving

Watch out for pedestrians

Use a helmet when riding a motorcycle
